The 9th of July marked a day where thousands of Malaysians took to the streets

Bersih

The 9th of July marked a day where thousands of Malaysians took to the streets. It was under the banner of Bersih, seeking clean and fair elections. The Government and other critics dismissed the rally as an Opposition initiative to undermine the Government. I think what was clear though that for the people who marched and for those in support of the rally, it was an expression of the people's anger towards the Government.

The Inspector General of Police was quoted as saying that only 6,000 showed up for the rally. The numbers are estimated to be closer to 50,000.

In the days leading up to 9th July, there were (ridiculous) stories by the police on how they had found hidden stashes of weapons and the police immediately linked the parangs and Molotov cocktails as being weapons to be used by the protestors. The rally itself on 9th July proved to be peaceful but it was the police that employed heavy counter-measures. In typical fashion, tear gas and water cannons were used and there are also reports and videos of police kicking a few protestors.

The video below captures the event very well. Definitely worth viewing.
