May 29, 2013  –  HEALTH  -  Three people have died from a deadly new SARS-like virus, taking the total death toll to 27. The unnamed victims were from Saudi Arabia and died in the country's eastern region, the Saudi health ministry confirmed today. Yesterday, a 65-year-old man died in France as health officials warned the MERS-CoV virus is now a global threat with 49 confirmed cases worldwide. Earlier this week, the World Health Organization warned that the disease, first identified in humans in September, is now their greatest global concern. The MERS-CoV virus is related to SARS, which killed some 800 people in a global epidemic in 2003. Dr Margaret Chan, head of the WHO, singled out the illness in a speech on Monday in Geneva. ‘We understand too little about this virus when viewed against the magnitude of its potential threat,’ Chan said at the annual WHO meeting. ‘We do not know where the virus hides in nature. CHI È DI SCENA… Sono nata nel 1929. Quando ero piccola, sette, otto anni, mi veniva in testa un pensiero che mi esaltava: morire. Quando morirò? Com’è quando si muore? Come mi vestirò da morta? Un gruppo di cinque giovani studentesse della scuola danese di Hjallerup ha condotto un esperimento sui semi di crescione. Queste studentesse erano interessate a determinare se le onde wifi influenzato o meno lo sviluppo di alcune piante. I risultati sono impressionanti. Per 12 giorni, hanno studiato dei semi di crescione. Il primo gruppo di semi è stato esposto a microonde wireless, il secondo invece è stato isolato da qualsiasi radiazione. Risultato: i semi esposti alle radiazioni hanno appena germogliato e alcuni sono persino mutati, mentre quelli non esposti alle radiazioni, si sono sviluppati senza problemi (come mostrato nelle due foto qui sotto). May 21, 2013  –  OKLAHOMA  -   A devastating, two-mile-wide tornado touched down near Oklahoma City on Monday, killing at least 51 people—including at least 20 children—decimating homes, businesses and a pair of elementary schools in the suburb of Moore. According to the state's medical examiner, the death toll was expected to rise. The schools—Plaza Towers Elementary and Briarwood Elementary—were leveled by the tornado. It was unclear how many children were in them at the time the twister hit, but according to KFOR-TV, at least seven children died at Plaza Towers, and as many as two dozen more were feared to be trapped inside the rubble. May 20, 2013  –  ALASKA  -  232 days - it took over 30 years for Anchorage to set a new record for the longest snow season on record. The National Weather Service measured 2/10ths of an inch just after 9 p.m. Friday and 1/10th Saturday morning - breaking the old record of 230 days set in 1981-1982. Anchorage police responded to 22 crashes, 4 with injuries and 37 vehicles in distress between midnight and noon Saturday. Police say roads were wet and not icy midday and "motorists should use caution if the temperatures drop below freezing. Other parts of the city had much higher amounts of snow, however official measurements must be consistent and observed at the Sand Lake forecast office. The recent snowfall also broke the daily record for liquid precipitation, lowest maximum temperature for May 17, and a host of other records. May 14, 2013 – GRAY, TN (WJHL) - A Tri-Cities man has video of what appears to be a large chunk of ice that he says fell from the sky on Wednesday (May 8) and landed in a yard in Gray, TN. Andy Miller says his children were playing outside along Keeview Drive off Hales Chapel Road around 4 p.m. when they heard what sounded like a rocket. “They ran into the house shaking,” Miller said. He used his phone to record video of the children inspecting the pile of pure white ice sitting in a gouged out hole in the ground near where they were playing. And the risk of spillover to humans was “constant or growing”, according to one of the authors of a study published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B. Pigs are an important source of new human strains of influenza A, such as the 2009-10 H1N1 pandemic that emerged in Mexico and infected an estimated fifth of the world’s population. China is currently in the grips of a deadly H7N9 bird flu virus that has killed 27 people since March, mainly in the country’s east – overlapping with the study area. May 8, 2013  –  SAUDI ARABIA  -  Saudi Arabia has had 13 cases in a recent outbreak of a new strain of coronavirus that has emerged from the Gulf and spread as far as Britain and France, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday, and seven of those have died. Saudi Arabia has reported 23 confirmed cases in total, Qatar two, Jordan two, Britain two and the United Arab Emirates one, the WHO said. Although there is no evidence of sustained human-to-human spread, there are concerns about clusters of cases. France reported its first case on Wednesday. The latest Saudi outbreak was restricted to al-Ahsa governorate in Eastern Province and all those infected had pre-existing health conditions, Arab News newspaper quoted Doctor Jafar al-Tawfiq, an infections specialist in Eastern Province, as saying.
